Blog Tour: Book Review: Something More by Jackie Khalilieh.Discussion What is your favorite book of poetry? It perfectly sums up the ability of this book to in its simple imagery, profound choices, and gorgeous writing.įind The Black Flamingo on Goodreads, Amazon, Indiebound, & The Book Depository. The intersection of the title and the image of the Black Flamingo is profound. Not only is it written in poetry, Michael also uses poetry himself as a way to express these conflicting emotions. We see these instances and realize, but to Michael growing up it doesn’t really register until later on. We witness his life from growing up, the ways he doesn’t understand these societal boxes of gender, all the way to his discovery of drag. I read The Black Flamingo in a day and I’m still shocked at how it manages to encompass such a breadth of emotions. Featuring a biracial MC, The Black Flamingo is both about Michael’s discovery figuring out what spaces he belongs to, but also how his queer identity intersects with his identity as a POC. It maintains a sense of tenderness, of being heart wrenching – feeling like a mistake, or an Outsider – with also moments of discovery and joy. You can feel the longing and confusion in these words. It not only weaves a beautiful story about self-acceptance and questioning one’s identity, it’s lyrical and profound. Told in poetry, there are lines that make you stop. I immediately fell in love with The Black Flamingo.

Whoever gets to the end will win his whole fortune and control of the OASIS. The inventor of the OASIS James Halliday (a kind of Steve Jobs character) died and revealed in his will that he left an easter egg trail inside the OASIS. So the actual story focuses on our protagonist Wade aka Parzival, a teenager who (like most of the population of Earth) escapes his terrible real life by living inside an online world called the OASIS. Reading this book is just like swimming around in a world of all your favourite things with a decent, suspenseful (if a little cheesy) plot. Oh and the music, the music! Has anybody made a Ready Player One play list? Somebody definitely should. Video game geeks will also be in total heaven, again I'm too young to have played any of these games but I am definitely aware of them as a video game fan. Mostly 80s references and as somebody who is a bit too young (I was born in 1988) to actually remember any of it I have a totally healthy obsession with the 1980s so I was happily understanding most of them. the term "bookgasm" definitely applies here. Or the more plausible explanation is that he is one of us. It's like Ernest Cline climbed into the collective geek brain and pulled out the best book ever. Why did it take so long to get around to?! I know I'm not the only one is saying that I feel like this book was written for me. Although I love the HEA ending, it's a little unrealistic for the ghost to come back to life again, and most other endings involve a lot of sadness. It's when reality sets in, and I realize that there aren't a lot of options that end positively for the couple in question. The third book in a ghost trilogy is where I start to dread the fact that I'm reading a series that features a relationship between a human and someone who is dead. Faced with impossible choices, Amelia decides to take her afterlife into her own hands-and fight back. She can join them in their quest to gather souls, with a catch: Once she joins them, she can never see Joshua again. But the demonic forces return to give her an ultimatum: turn herself over to the darkness or watch them murder one living person per week until she does.Īmelia fears she might really be doomed, until the forces of light give her another option. Now her greatest hope is to spend the rest of her afterlife with her living boyfriend, Joshua. A stalker ghost, misguided Seers, and spellbinding wraiths-Amelia Ashley has faced them all. Ask her a question like Where are my keys or Is he cheating on me or How are there perfectly preserved mammoths in recent ice and she just knows.
